Jessica Harris - Playful Techniques Craftsy Class Review

I’m DYING!!!

Ok. Not in the literal sense.

But I’ve been so wrapped up in wafer flowers lately that I have barely poked my head up to think about fondant and sugar (the treachery, I know!).

However, Jessica Harris has gone and done it again, released a new edition to her Clean and Simple Collection of Craftsy classes and I rushed to get it. Like seriously may have trampled someone to get to my computer.

I spent a few hours watching the lessons and rewatching a few because they just spoke to me. And y’all KNOW I have opinions about things and I love to share them with anyone who will listen. Care to listen? Read on!

30 Playful Texture Techniques

The lessons are set up perfectly for this class, and the organization makes the control freak in me super happy. (Imagine that, a caker who has a need to control stuff…).

Jessica starts with animal patterns and has created some really unique and SIMPLE techniques to make realistic looking animal prints on your tiered cakes, carved handbag cakes and even has tricks on using it on those every popular sugar high heels. No more weird animal prints. No excuses. Jessica says so. Me too.

There’s some wafer and gelatin work that of course stole my heart, BUT the technique that really made me giddy was the fish scales. I have no idea why this made me smile as big as I did or giggle routinely, but I LOVED the rainbow trout scales she makes! Like, really, Kara? Fish scales? Since when is this my thing? Well, now it is.

There are 3 amazing realistic wood textures she provides and she’s made it beyond easy. I would have complicated this idea just having a go myself, but she explains it using minimal tools and basic ideas that we already know about fondant and color. There were a few “AhHA!” moments for me. Or there were tons.

By far, my favorite lesson was the one she saved for last… BUILDING MATERIALS!!! So urban and sheik, amazingly beautiful to look at, and my goodness NO ONE has taught these great techniques yet! Problem solved. I’m actually going to employ a few of these techniques in a project I’m working on currently. It’s like she knew I needed some help with my design and created the class just for me.

I may have found my new favorite class on Craftsy here. I believe in teachers that open our eyes, teach us about WHY we do things certain ways, and help us step outside of the cake box when thinking about techniques. There may be no one better at it than Jessica. Get her class HERE!

That is until… 😉 (Keep you eyes peeled and subscribe to my newsletter so you don’t miss out on my AWESOME surprise coming early fall 2015!)
