I'm handing over the reigns today to my friend and amazing fellow caker Jess Atkins of Rosy Cakes in New Zealand. During a recent share session on my Facebook page her cake turned up as a favorite among the viewers, and it stopped me in my tracks. I was thrilled to feature it as one of the faves of the day. I've asked Jess to take over for a day and share with us how she made this fabulous cake and she generously accepted without hesitation. Enough from me... Enjoy! Edible Gelatin Sequins
Oooh how I have been waiting for a project to use these beauties on! I first created these in January of this year while I was experimenting with gelatin for my She Dragon cake. It was a whim and mostly because I had some left over gelatin and failed to clean a part of my counter... But. BUT! I stumbled upon something awesome! Here it is :) View Post
Craftsy Class Review: Clean and Simple Birthday Cakes with Jessica Harris
Oh, the addiction that is Craftsy... I love Craftsy. If you're not familiar with them, truly it is a wonderful platform for online learning at amazing prices with 24/7/forever access to the classes you purchased. A squirrel!). ;) You also have the ability to ask questions for the instructor or of other students and you get responses! It's fabulous! A PDF set of instructios, recipes, templates, resources, conversion charts is included with the class View Post
Kara’s Amaretto Fig Tea Biscuits (or Shortbread Cookies)
I needed to do some baking just for me. I wanted to play with a new flavor paste I got from Pastry Portal and I just wasn't in the mood for cake of any kind. I'm up to my eyeballs in cake all the time... Girl needs a break when cake invades her dreams. I was looking for something light, crisp, sweet, but not overly complicated. I make some killer complicated cookies with a scrumptious array of mix-ins. But simple sounded good. I found a great recipe from Ina Garten for shortbread cookies and figured I would mess with the flavoring and even combine two flavors. So I split the dough and View Post
Wafer “Bouquet” Rose Tutorial
You've been asking (well, almost demanding, but it's all good. I feel loved :) ) for this tutorial on my Wafer Bouquet Roses that I used in the globe atop my Gray Lace cake. So here it is! First, you'll find the step-by-step photos and instructions with brief text descriptions. At the end you'll find the video with some full motion shots to see exactly how I handled the wafer. I may seem like I'm being less than gentle at times, especially during the dusting, but this paper is very durable and can take it. It's wonderful to have dropped a finished rose on my table and have it bounce a bit View Post
Backdrops: Deciding What To Purchase
...but there's sooooo many to choose from! I know, right?!? And we want all of them for myriad reasons because we could picture each one being useful for tons of different cakey projects. It's like me in a handbag store, I want 'em all! Alas, budgets and just being a reasonable adult, dictate that we should choose wisely. If we've determined that we will "act like responsible grown-ups" (insert one of Kara's signature teenagerish eye rolls here) then there are certain things to think about before deciding on which one(s) to buy. Here's what I considered just prior to my purchase, though View Post
How to Avoid the “Same” Mistake when Designing a Cake
How do we design cakes? Well, I can't speak for every cake designer out there, but I'm pretty much an expert on how I design my cakes. (Well, someone has to be an expert on me, right?) It has been a journey, a learning process about identifying what my design habits have been and what they yielded: paying attention to what my designs and ideas turned into once they became cake versus what I was satisfied with. If you want to streamline your designing and stop struggling with questions like: "What should I make? What would look right? What would be unique and original?", then start paying View Post
How to Make Perfect Ombre Fondant
I had never made anything ombre prior to creating this little ditty. I was purely curious about how other cakers ombre'd things, so I though I'd share how I did it and ask for feedback. My goodness it was well received by the caking and crafting communities! Of course then, it needs to find its permanent residence here on my blog. It's rather self explanatory, but I rolled two equally sized balls of fondant into tapered logs, turned them opposite each other and cut them at even intervals to create an evenly graduating spectrum of shades. You don't have to use equal portions of color to View Post
