May I tell you a story? It’s a pretty good one. It’s about a girl, her sweets blog, culinary experimentation, and garbage.
Just so you don’t run away before I have the chance to share this awesomeness with you, “garbage” is a treat that a cake friend and fellow food experimentation nerd sent to me. It should have been called crack. The addictive qualities of that stuff were off the charts and I had an immense sugar crash mid day from snacking on it mindlessly all morning. Seriously Scott (of Seven Ravens Bakehouse)… That stuff is nuts.
I know. What does this have to do with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Macs? Read on…
One day, Scott sent me a box filled with this “garbage”. It was the most amazing assortment of cereal, snacky foods, cookies, tids and bits from around the kitchen (all the things we shouldn’t make meals out of… I made a meal out of it, though) tossed in a sugary syrup bringing all the flavors together in a happy, salty-sweet mess.
Amongst the sugar high happening in that glorious bag was Cheetos. I was unsure. I love Cheetos as they are. They don’t need help. They don’t need anything. They are magical and unnecessary all on their own. But these didn’t even look like my normal guilty pleasure snack.
They were darker, more menacing, and when I popped one in my mouth it bit my tongue. Not like the awkward kisser who tries to nibble while kissing. The SPICEY kind of bite.
Well, I ate it and realized he had mentioned something about Flamin’ Hot something or other and this was it. Somehow life had escaped me and I missed the whole Flamin’ Hot Cheetos craze and didn’t even know they existed.
Well, I do now. Clearly.
You know how you learn a fun, new, quirky word and suddenly you start to read it and hear it everywhere? Like suddenly the word uncovered itself and is playing around with you now? Well, that what happened here. Suddenly I started seeing everything with this hot snack mixed in like donuts, mac n cheese, body soap… Alright, not body soap. But the preoccupation really is that serious!
Not to be outdone, I had to give ’em a try.
And it just so happened that I was about to embark on a bake-off for the blog and macarons were on the docket. Bunches. In different flavors, and as luck would have it I hadn’t picked my flavor offering yet.
FLAMIN’ HOT CHEETOS!!! Of course! (don’t worry, I did do 3 other macs that I’ll be sharing with you!)
So I thought on this, because I knew that this would be a winner or a big loser. I worried about loser. But I’m not one to back down to any food in the kitchen. I will master it. I’m the boss, applesauce! Stand down, Cheetos.
Long story short (because the recipes for the Cheetos coated shells and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos ganache are already below for you) I made them along with all the other macs. I tested all my flavors, tweaked, adjusted, photographed and sent them out the door to my husband’s co-workers. They love when he comes in with odd packages. It means he’s concealing goodies from me. They know me. They get all my bakes. But only the ones who play nice with my hubby… (wink wink, nudge nudge ASMs!)
*clears throat because she got something off her chest just now.*
As he described all the flavors present on the tray – pistachio, cookies ‘n’ creme, cherry cheesecake, and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos – quickly all the other macs were gobbled up first. Everyone avoided the showy, bright orange treat.
[insert sad face here] Poor Cheetos Macs! But still, his co-workers know what magic I make in the kitchen, and I never send recipes out to them to “test” on them. They only get the recipes I would publish here on my blog. So the ones who came to the treat giveaway towards the end only had the Cheetos Macaron try.
And guess what?
They were pleasantly surprised 🙂 (Well, duh guys! You know me!)
They aren’t overly spicy, but the flavor is unmistakable. The sweetness balances the savory so wonderfully! And the white chocolate infused ganache is the perfect blank canvas for the Cheetos to shine! And, if I do say so myself, the little bits of baked crushed Cheetos on top are positively delightful! *Hey Cheetos! You might want to try an extra bake on your stuff after frying them… it’s kinda amazing! <— someone forward that to the guy who makes the Cheetos, please.)
Scott suggested using dark chocolate with this… I’m thinking next time, they get filled and then half dipped in a deep, dark chocolate… Unless YOU beat me to it! (and if you do, SHARE WITH ME!!!)
I mean come on. LOOK AT THAT!!! I dare you to try them. I can’t guarantee they’ll be served at Christmas around the country or anything, but if you’re adventurous in the kitchen and in culinary endeavors, and if you like to push your own limits, have a go!
